Kindergarten is having a blast in music learning about keeping a steady beat.  Our Dragons are singing a song about a pumpkin while tossing it back and forth to the beat.  We have a talented group of musicians here at KDE!

Wishtree Book Club

Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders met this morning to discuss the book Wishtree by Katherine Applegate over juice and donuts.  We all LOVED this book and had a wonderful discussion about sticking up for others and embracing people’s differences. We even made our very own Wishtree!

Mrs. Davidson Spends Time in 2nd Grade

2nd grade enjoyed learning from our namesake Mrs. Davidson. She spoke to students about the history of Katy, TX for our social studies unit.  Thank you, Mrs. Davidson, for always making time for our Dragons!  We love learning with you!  

Now This is a Vending Machine!

Thank you to our wonderful PTA for making our book vending machine dream come true.  We opened up our vending machine for shopping a few weeks ago, and our Dragons are loving it!  The books can't be purchased, but our Dragons can earn them for making great choices and growing in their reading lives.  We give away 5 tokens each Wednesday during WOW Wednesday.  Dragons earn a WOW by showing respect, making good choices, and being kind.  Our ELA teachers also hand out golden tickets to readers really working hard.  The golden ticket can be turned in for a token to the book vending machine.  Once a Dragon earns a book, it is their book to keep. 

Do Good Dragon Kindness Crew

Our Do Good Dragons Kindness Crew is off and running.  Students in grades 4th and 5th come together once every other week to talk about ways we can all make Davidson a kinder place.  The group lines the hallways every Monday morning to welcome students with smiles and high-fives.  They have also started a weekly kindness challenge.  This week, the kindness challenge is a simple one...say please and thank you.  It is something so simple but makes a huge difference.  Stay tuned for the next challenge!

Artist Celebration

Twelve of our students participated this year in the Katy ISD Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo art contest. The pieces entered were made in art class and selected by the art teachers for their effort and craftsmanship. We are happy to share that one of our 5th graders won the “Best of Show” trophy and will represent all Katy ISD Elementary schools at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo at NRG Arena. The other pieces received high honors and beautiful ribbons. Many of the pieces were finalists or gold seal winners. We are so proud of our dragons and their artwork. If you would like to see the art, it will be displayed in the library for viewing. The Best of Show art will be displayed in the Hayloft Gallery, located on the first floor of NRG Center in the west end of the lobby (main hallway). The gallery is very popular and will be viewed by many visitors during the 2019 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo which runs February 25-March 17th.

Place Value Structures in 5th Grade

Take a peek at what was happening in Mrs. Torres' class today! 

I gave the students the number 1,245 and they had to take out that amount of PV blocks and build a structure that stands.  I then told them to take away 10.  (The structure may have had to be rebuilt).  They completed the math on their desk to show how many blocks were left.  I then told them to take away 7.  Some, very quickly, decided that they needed to exchange a 10 for 10-1’s before they could take any away. But others just took away the 5 – 1’s and 2 sticks of 10 to equal taking 7 away.  We had the discussion of having to make that exchange first.  They then completed the math on their desk to show what regrouping looks like in a math equation.

We then took it up a level and made the PV blocks be ones, tenths and hundredths and did the same activity.  Great discussions were had about lining up decimal points and how regrouping looks the same.

Place Value in 3rd Grade

3rd graders have been working on different ways to write a number. This includes standard form, base ten form, word form, expanded form, and expanded notation. We used our place value disc to help us with expanded notation.

3rd graders enjoyed spending time in the science lab. They explored different ways to classify matter. They tested and measured the mass, texture, temperature, magnetism, sink or float, and states of matter. What a great way to start the year!

3rd graders spent time in the computer lab working on our new math program DreamBox. They loved it!

Guidance Lessons with Mrs. Snead

Wow!  It feels great to be back at school.  I am having so much fun seeing our Dragons all around school.  I have been out and about teaching lessons about the importance of our words with each other and on social media with our fifth-grade classes.  They are amazing at working together as a team and problem-solving.   Below you can see our fifth-graders trying to get toothpaste back into the tube.  They learned that toothpaste, like words, can't be put back into the tube once it has been squeezed out.  

I have also enjoyed doing a lesson with Kindergarten this week.  Our little Dragons think I do all sorts of things...from locking all the doors to making the rules to handing out papers.  They are so cute!  We read a book and learned about some of the things I do.  “Mrs. Snead cares about you, listens to you and helps you!”

I am looking forward to teaching lessons to all the other grade levels over the next few weeks.
