Guidance Lessons with Mrs. Snead

Wow!  It feels great to be back at school.  I am having so much fun seeing our Dragons all around school.  I have been out and about teaching lessons about the importance of our words with each other and on social media with our fifth-grade classes.  They are amazing at working together as a team and problem-solving.   Below you can see our fifth-graders trying to get toothpaste back into the tube.  They learned that toothpaste, like words, can't be put back into the tube once it has been squeezed out.  

I have also enjoyed doing a lesson with Kindergarten this week.  Our little Dragons think I do all sorts of things...from locking all the doors to making the rules to handing out papers.  They are so cute!  We read a book and learned about some of the things I do.  “Mrs. Snead cares about you, listens to you and helps you!”

I am looking forward to teaching lessons to all the other grade levels over the next few weeks.

Whole Brain Teaching Summer Book Study

KDE teachers devoted 6 Monday nights over the summer to a book study about Whole Brain Teaching by Chris Biffle. Studies show that students who can teach their peers what they have learned score higher on tests than those learning for their own sake and understand the material better. Therefore, teachers explored the importance of using direct instruction as well as cooperative learning through students mirroring key points, teaching a partner, and eventually teaching the class. Whole brain teaching also has five simple classroom rules and many strategies for student engagement that make expectations clear & learning fun!

At two sessions, Ashley Beierle, Bethke Elementary’s ELA instructional coach, taught teachers key gestures from Whole Brain Teaching called brainies and how to adapt ELA lessons to be more interactive. Teachers were thankful that the books were provided at no cost and for the opportunity to learn about an innovative instructional approach. They can’t wait to apply what they have learned this coming year! Here are some pictures of their summer learning.
